National Safe Boating Week is a reminder that anyone operating a motorized boat in New York State must carry a valid safe boating certificate — and local expert Ira Goldman joined the FLX Morning Podcast to walk through what boaters in the Finger Lakes region need before they hit the water.
Goldman, a member of America’s Boating Club, noted that the certificate requirement has few exceptions — those renting from a licensed business or holding a Coast Guard license may be exempt, but nearly everyone else must complete an approved course through the National Association of Boating Law Administrators. Skipping it can result in a fine of up to $250 and potential restriction from operating on the water. America’s Boating Club chapters in Watkins Glen and Auburn offer in-person courses, and online options are available at americasboatingcourse.com. The Sheriff’s Office, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum, and New York State Parks and Recreation also offer courses.
